"Last Line of Defense"
Sam DeVoy, a student in Rob Millard-Mendez’s ART 104 Design in Materials course, designed “Last Line of Defense,” a sculpture made of concrete, black and red granite, copper piping, water and a pump.
“The seated figures are meant to encourage people to sit with the doctors wearing protective gear, the whole aspect of putting yourself with them is supposed to bring reality to the situation. In the same way, the names are supposed to invoke a sense of sadness, as the piece would also serve as a memorial for the people who lost their lives in the hospital, and the black stone off to the side is for the people whose names would overflow,” says DeVoy. “The fountain purposely stops right before the doctors, to emphasize the protection they were providing, and they’re set apart to emphasize the importance of social distance with this disease.”
