"Weight of the World"
Katie Lewis, a student in Rob Millard-Mendez’s ART 104 Design in Materials course, designed “Weight of the World,” a sculpture made of bronze, marble and other stones.
“I want this sculpture to connect to other issues along with the COVID-19 crisis. Not adding faces or details to the figure allows for the audience to fill in the details with their own imagination based on their own life experiences,” says Lewis. “I added the small detail of the hands overlapping because I wanted to recognize that the hospital staff isn’t only supporting the outside world, but they support each other as well. Their teamwork helps them to be more effective. I added large stones as the base and made the figures out of marble to symbolize the strength the staff displays at this time.”
